It is widely acknowledged, for tensile anchors with long lengths, that the elastic incompatibility between the tendon and the grouted ground is the cause of inefficient utilization of the available soil strength.
As load is increased a high percentage of the full available bond 'skin friction' is mobilized by the multiple of short unit lengths.

Simultaneous loading of the multiple units in a conventional size borehole achieves considerable increase in pull-out capacity over that of conventional tiebacks and it ensures a proportional increase in load capacity when the borehole is increased. The increase load capacity of SBMAs typically allows a 50% reduction in conventional anchors.
THE REMOVABLE ANCHOR SYSTEM
Totally removable anchors/tiebacks have become mandatory within temporary works in many major cities and their use is now gaining in popularity on a worldwide basis.

A patented high capacity SBMA type anchor is particularly attractive to adjacent land owners and city councils since it allows the complete removal of the entire steel tensile member from the grouted borehole. Furthermore, in conjunction with the SBMA properties, it allows a 50% reduction in anchors.
ACTIVELY STRESSED SOIL NAIL
For many years the limitations in the provision of passive soil nails has been acknowledged since its loading is only achieved by slope movement. The patented Actively Stressed Soil Nail incorporates two members in the same grouted borehole: One consists of a single anchor tendon fixed in the resistant zone and prestressed against a lightly clad soil facing, which significantly reduces face movement.

The second member is a fully bonded soil nail which effectively ties the active zone of soil to the resistant zone. This is the only prestressed soil nail that transfers load to correct soil slope structure to ensure stabilization. The incorporation of two working tendons in a single soil nail bore ensures economic savings, too.
